Catholics in San Diego have a new place to worship with the recent opening of the Our Lady of the Rosary Church. This modern structure, with its ‘garland of roses’ design, is situated on a hilltop in Rancho Penasquitos and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
The church was designed by local architect James Lifshutz, who was inspired by the rose-covered trellises found in European gardens. The exterior walls are covered in glass, which allows natural light to flood the sanctuary. The church features a large central dome and two smaller domes on either side. It can accommodate up to 1,500 worshippers and has ample parking available.

The History of the Church
You may not know this, but Our Lady of the Rosary Church is home to the largest Spanish-language Catholic congregation in the United States. This church has a rich history that spans back over a hundred years.
The original church was built in 1912, and it was considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in San Diego. It was made out of wood and had a tiled roof. Unfortunately, it caught fire in 1933 and burned down completely.
The current church was built in its place and was completed in 1955. It’s made out of precast concrete and is an amazing example of mid-century modern architecture. The church is also known as the “Garland of Roses” because of the beautiful murals that line its walls.
The Architecture of the Church

The church was designed by architect James Renwick, who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. The detailing on the facade is just stunning, with carvings of roses and other flowers, as well as images of saints.
