The Biography (Life and Death) of Pope Benedict XVI

Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, better known as Pope Benedict XVI, served as the leader of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Vatican City State from 2005 to 2013. This was the first time since 1294 that a pope had resigned on their own accord; the last occurrence being Gregory XII in 1415.

Born in Marktl am Inn, Germany on April 16, 1927, Pope Benedict was the youngest child of Joseph Ratzinger Sr., who worked as a police officer, and his wife Maria. The Ratzingers were a devout Catholic family, and Benedict was schooled at the Benedictine monastery in Traunstein. During World War II, he joined the German anti-aircraft corps and was ordained as a priest in 1951.

Initially, Pope Benedict had a variety of educational and pastoral roles, including teaching theology at the University of Bonn. Then, in 1977, he was named Archbishop of Munich and Freising, and in 1981 he was bestowed the title of cardinal. In 1992, Pope John Paul II selected him to be the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a post he held until his election as pope in 2005.

As head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict was renowned for his loyalty to traditional Catholic beliefs and his endeavors to bring togetherness in the Church. He aimed to build up the Church’s relations with different religious groups, particularly Judaism and Islam, and he set off on several prestigious trips to various countries.

Pope Benedict was widely known for his strong stance against topics such as abortion, contraception, and same-sex marriage. He frequently lectured about the dangers of atheism and secularism, asserting that these ideologies contradicted the Church’s customary morals. In 2013, Pope Benedict, who was in his late 70s and in poor health, declared his decision to resign from the papacy. On February 28, 2013, he relinquished his authority and was replaced by Pope Francis.

Following his abdication, Pope Benedict XVI stepped back from the public eye and relocated to a convent situated in Vatican City. Even though he was no longer an active member of the clergy, he stayed productive as an author and religious scholar and still showed up at certain public events. Eventually, he passed away on the 31st of December, 2022, at the age of ninety-five.

Generally speaking, Pope Benedict XVI left a meaningful imprint on the Catholic Church, due to his fervent adherence to orthodox teachings and his endeavours to bring people together. After resigning from his position as the head of the Catholic Church, he made a significant contribution to the papacy’s history, and his impact is still felt in the Church and beyond.

May his Soul rest in peace Amen.
